A few weeks ago, I was discussing the issue of the term “buzzword” with the team at The Atlantic, and someone else asked, “If a term gets tossed around, like’social media,’ is it really just a buzzword?” I explained that buzzwords are important because they help us find new meanings for words that we wouldn’t have otherwise come across. I mentioned that we often have to rely on buzzwords to keep track of what we’ve done in the past.
In that example, the term buzzword is a really vague term, but it seems to me that it has a certain implication. It’s like a term that we can use to define ourselves. It’s the kind of thing we use when we need to describe things so that we can think about them in a new way.

We have all looked at the software in our lives that takes up a lot of our time, and then decided that we could write about it in a way that people are actually interested in reading. The buzzwords are designed to make that “writing” process more interesting, and hopefully more fun.
When the new people begin working on their software, they create a buzzword or two. Then they figure out how they can make that buzzword actually mean something in the world. That’s what brent reeves is doing in his latest project, “brentreeves.com.” I’m excited about what he’s doing in his “brentreeves.com,” because he’s created a site that’s about as fun to read as my own blog.
