The fact is that the majority of our thoughts and actions are on autopilot. Our habits, routines, impulses, and reactions carry us through our lives so we don’t have to stop and think about it everytime we wipe our ass.
The problem is when we’re not on autopilot for so long that we forget we’re on autopilot. Because when we’re not even aware of our own habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then we no longer control them.

The main reason for this is the fact that when you’re not aware of your habits, routines, impulses, and reactions, then you can’t control them. A person without self-awareness just hits the bottle and doesn’t look back.
There is a lot of research on this concept called “the autopilot effect” (aka the “I don’t have to think about it” effect). In the book Neuro Linguistic Programming, author Daniel Goleman describes it like this: “The autopilot effect is when you act without thinking, even unconsciously.
We call it the I dont have to think about it effect because it is similar. In essence, youre not aware of your habits, routines, impulses, and reactions so when you do something that you find yourself repeating, you just continue doing it. You just keep doing it over and over. You dont even realize that youre doing it.
We’ve been there. It’s something unique about that kind of life. I know I’m not supposed to say this but it made me feel better.
I dont have to think about it because I just keep doing it, but I do feel better when I do. To me I feel so much happier when I dont think at all.
This is where things get more and more interesting. The problem with autopilot is that it stops us from taking any positive steps as well as negative ones. If you have to think about how you are screwing yourself then chances are you’re doing it to get attention, and when you don’t have the attention you want, you’ll just continue doing it. That’s when the anxiety sets in.
This is the perfect situation because it means that by taking an extra step, youre increasing your chances of getting help and making a step forward. For instance, by focusing on the negative, you may end up making a step more difficult as well as one that is easier. And by focusing on the positive you may end up making a step more easy. One of the reasons people quit smoking is because they give up on the addiction early. You should too, but not because you feel better.
