To be honest, the first time we saw an illustration of the word “self-awareness,” we were both like, “Awww…” Aha! The word “self-awareness” is one of those words that’s so powerful and universal. It has a lot to do with awareness and awareness of our own self-awareness. This is what the word is all about.
It’s a word that, for a moment, made sense because it was the definition of the word that the dictionary gave us. All of our definitions of self-awareness, however, don’t make sense because they don’t actually define a word. We need to have a clear definition of what we mean when we say self-awareness.
Self-awareness refers to “the ability to recognize our own inner knowledge and self-awareness and the awareness of others.” To define self-awareness you need to know what is meant by the word and what it actually means. If we simply say, “there is a certain amount of self-awareness,” we might be speaking of something other than self-awareness.
This was my point above. We have to have some precise definition of the word, otherwise we can never have a clear picture of the meaning of the word. This is why we can’t have a self-awareness game because the meaning is not clear. There are some things you can describe with the word “self-awareness”, but most of them are just words you can write down and say “I’m self-aware”.
Let me explain a little more about self-awareness here. Let’s say you are having a conversation with your partner about something important to you. If you say to your partner, “I am self-aware that you are important to me,” then you are self-aware. This means, that you are aware of everything that you are doing. If you don’t say this, then you are not self-aware.
I had a very similar experience with a friend of mine. Awhile ago, we were talking about how we both needed to be more self-aware. She said, I have self-awareness, that I am self-aware. I said, that I am self-aware, but we both had trouble saying that.
Now this is not the same thing as saying you are self-aware, but rather you are aware of what you are doing. For example, if you make a decision to eat french fries, you are self-aware of that decision. You are aware of the fact that you are eating french fries. You are aware that french fries are good for you.
Self-awareness is an important part of self-care. The more you think about your decisions, habits, and reactions, the less likely you are to take them for granted and make them habitual. As an example, when I eat french fries, I am aware that those fries are good for me. I am aware that french fries are good for me, but I am not aware of that awareness, so I don’t take it for granted.
For many years I have been eating fries and watching them, but it was never until recently that I noticed how many french fries I eat every day. I realized that I had become completely unaware of this fact.
Some people have a hard time adjusting to sudden changes in their eating habits, like when they suddenly start eating meat. I have a hard time adjusting to the fact that I now eat french fries all the time. When my food habits suddenly change, I am very aware of my change, and so I try to think about it consciously.
